British man arrested in Kyrgyzstan appeals for help
08.05.10 09:58 f.USSR
The brother of the British citizen arrested during last months revolution in Kyrgyzstan, says he believes there is no hope of a fair trial unless there is "more energetic and more assertive action" from the British government.

Former BBC journalist Vugar Khalilov will next weekmark his first full month in solitary confinement in Bishkek.

Vugar Khalilov was arrested on 12 April as a popular uprising swept the government of former president Kurmanbek Bakiyev out of power.

He was charged with "legalisation of illegal funds" in a short hearing two days later, a charge he denies, and since has been allowed just one visit by the British honorary consul.

Azer Khalilov, who lived with his brother in Wood Green in London, said his brother had been named as one of the "enemies of the Kyrygz people who must be brought to punishment" by the new Deputy Prime Minister, Almazbek Atambayev.

"Give all this happening, I cannot expect that he will receive a fair trial unless the British Government takes a clear, assertive and energetic stance in this case," he said.

Azer Khalilov said his brother was in considerable pain and faced possible paralysis if he continued to be kept in isolated and denied treatment for his medical condition, a chronic case of spinal hernia.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "The British embassy is aware of the arrest of Vugar Khalilov in Bishkek. Consular officials last visited Mr Khalilov on 22 April and have made further requests for further visits. We continue to monitor the case closely and provide assistance."

Vugar Khalilov, 41, was born in Azerbaijan and then worked in London at the BBC World Service for several years before moving to Bishkek to set up his own public relations company.

He has represented Eugene Gourevitch, a US banker who the new administration now accuses of helping Bakiyev funnel away hundreds of millions dollars from the Kyrgyz development fund,.

Khalilovs company, Flexi Communications, also designed the website of the ousted president, and represented companies controlled by the Presidents family.
